Elevator Light Curtain vs Photocell vs Mechanical Safety Edge

Elevator door systems have used several different methods to detect passengers or objects in the doorway. The main difference is how much of the opening is monitored and whether physical contact is required before the device reacts.

A single photocell, a mechanical safety edge and a multi-beam light curtain can all be part of a door-reopening strategy, but they detect obstructions in different ways.

None of these technologies should be judged only by whether it is “older” or “newer.” Suitability depends on the lift design, applicable code, existing door system, required detection coverage and authority having jurisdiction.

Replacement & Modernization

The same principle applies when replacing one light curtain with another. Similar housing length or beam count does not establish compatibility with the existing door operator or lift controller.

Elevator Door Codes in 2026: Europe and North America

Elevator door protection is governed within lift-specific codes and standards. The applicable edition depends not only on the country, but also on when the lift was installed, whether it is being modernized and which edition has been adopted by the local authority.

This is one reason elevator door light curtains should not be selected by borrowing the Type, PL or SIL language used for machinery safety light curtains. Elevator door reopening devices belong within the lift-code framework applicable to the installation.

Another complication is that 2026 is a transition year in the international standards landscape. New ISO and European editions have been published, while existing lifts may still be governed by earlier requirements, national legislation or modernization rules.

Europe

From EN 81-20 Toward EN ISO 8100-1:2026

EN 81-20 has been a central European standard for the safety requirements of passenger and goods-passenger lifts. In 2026, the international framework moved forward with the publication of ISO 8100-1:2026, followed by publication of EN ISO 8100-1:2026 within the European standards system.

ISO 8100-1:2026 covers safety rules for the construction and installation of passenger and goods-passenger lifts. Importantly, the ISO scope states that the 2026 edition is not applicable to passenger and goods-passenger lifts installed before its publication date.

For an existing installation, modernization or replacement project, it is therefore not enough to ask which standard has the newest publication date. The applicable requirements should be confirmed against the lift’s age, modernization scope, national adoption, legislation and the relevant authority having jurisdiction.

North America

ASME A17.1 / CSA B44

In North America, elevator and escalator requirements are commonly addressed through the harmonized ASME A17.1 / CSA B44 safety-code framework. The current ASME publication is A17.1-2025.

The code addresses far more than door sensing. Its scope extends across elevator design, construction, installation, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, alteration and repair. Door reopening devices therefore need to be considered within the complete elevator-system requirements rather than as an isolated optical sensor specification.

A jurisdiction may adopt a different edition from the latest published edition. Local building codes, state or provincial rules, inspection authorities and modernization requirements can therefore affect which provisions apply to a specific lift.

What to Check When Selecting or Replacing an Elevator Light Curtain

A replacement light curtain should be selected as part of the existing elevator door system. Matching sensor length or counting optical beams is not enough to establish compatibility.

The most useful starting point is the existing lift documentation: identify the current light curtain, door operator, controller and installation geometry before choosing a replacement.

For a modernization project, the same information helps determine whether the existing arrangement can be retained or whether the new reopening device changes the mechanical, electrical or commissioning requirements of the door system.

Start With the Old Model Number Whenever Possible

If an elevator light curtain has failed, photograph the device label and record the transmitter, receiver, controller or interface-module model numbers before removing the old equipment. Also record connector types, cable routing, mounting dimensions and the door operator model.

This information is usually more useful than sending only the doorway width or asking for “a universal elevator light curtain.”

A successful replacement matches the door system, not just the size of the old sensor.

Selection Note
There is no universal beam-count rule for every elevator light curtain.

Why an Elevator Door Keeps Reopening: Light Curtain Troubleshooting Principles

Repeated or unexplained door reopening does not automatically mean the light curtain itself has failed. The cause may be optical, mechanical, electrical or related to the surrounding door-control system.

A useful diagnosis starts by identifying whether the reopening signal is caused by a genuine obstruction, unstable optical detection, sensor movement, cable or interface problems, or a fault elsewhere in the elevator door system.
