Within that framework, Type 4 devices are designed to meet
more demanding requirements for fault detection, diagnostic behavior
and resistance to dangerous failure than lower device Types.

In practical terms, this means a Type 4 safety light curtain is designed
so that faults relevant to the protective function are detected with a
high level of reliability. In practical terms, Type 4 devices incorporate diagnostic measures intended
to detect safety-relevant faults so that such faults do not silently defeat
  the protective function.

Type 4 Is a Device Classification — Not a Complete Machine Rating

One of the most common misunderstandings is to treat
Type 4, Category 4, PL e and SIL 3 as interchangeable
labels. They are related concepts used in functional-safety engineering,
but they describe different parts of the safety problem.

The light curtain has its own device classification. The complete
safety function also includes the safety-related control system,
machine stopping behavior, output devices, wiring, diagnostic coverage
and the way the safeguard is positioned around the hazard.

Type 4 Also Does Not Determine Resolution

A Type 4 safety light curtain may use different detection resolutions.
For example, the current CCH ENT platform includes 14, 25 and 45 mm
        options.
